My Neighbour Recommends - Cheesy Christmas

It’s Christmas time and volunteer Nora and her Neighbour meet once again at a rather unusual place where they not only discuss cheesy Christmas films but also the common ground of A Castle for Christmas, Madonna’s music video Like a Prayer and a classic called Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. <!--break-->

Merry Christmas…and keep your eyes and ears open for a potential upcoming flute album and a Christmas movie masterpiece written by a random Hallmark movie writer…with the help of our two protagonists. <!--break--> Dammit I fell asleep during a Hallmark movie so now I'll never know if the cute couple who misunderstood each other at first fell in love.

My Neighbour Recommends - Time Travel

It’s been a while since the last “My Neighbour Recommends” episode. Rumors say it was due to volunteer Nora not feeling her usual self after visiting her Neighbour in that rather spooky castle for the Halloween Podcast. Anyway, this episode marks a special occasion: having visited her Neighbour only in special places before, Nora is meeting him in an even more spectacular place this time: his very own flat!
In this episode they are going to discuss time travel films Timecrimes, 2007, by Nacho Vigalondo and Arrival, 2016, by Denis Villeneuve.
This episode promises to be a cosy one…or doesn’t it?

"Charlotte and Maria discuss their opinion on the controversial new addition to French cinema. Please note that this episode contains spoilers. <!--break-->

After recently attending an advance screening of the film hosted by The Final Girls Berlin, Charlotte and Maria decided to weigh in on the controversial new film. Said by many to be "the most messed up film ever", as fans of horror Charlotte and Maria were intrigued and felt driven to watch the film and then share their own opinions on it.

He loves movies...and board games. He likes cooking Gumbo for his friends and spending Sundays in his bathrobe. But most importantly: He is my neighbour. And he recommends films. <!--break-->

In this Halloween episode, volunteer Nora visits her Neighbour in a remote castle, where he is currently working as a mobile hair and nail stylist to a “person” called The Count. Prepare for a spooky episode as they are talking about dark castle films such as Stuart Gordon’s Castle Freak and Peter Medak’s The Changeling. Moreover, we see two FIRSTS in this episode, well, in Nora’s case, it might be three…

21. BHM Special CANDYMAN past and present

"Tracey, Charlotte and Neal do a deep dive into the themes and issues of the two Candyman films, the first from 1992 and the second from 2021. Please note that this episode contains spoilers. <!--break-->
Candyman — written and directed by Bernard Rose, adapted from Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” is a bloody horror story transplanted from it's original setting in Liverpool, to the projects of Chicago. The relocation of the film allowed for the narrative to take on a much more depth, as the horrors of American history were brought to the fore. The more recent version, directed by Nia DaCosta show how although things may look very different now the original location of Cabrini-Green has been gentrified, the scars and trauma of the original narrative still remain..."

It’s not just “silly season”, but also our 20th Podcast! That’s why it turned out to be a bit longer than usual…or is the real reason behind the longer episode, volunteer Nora’s tough journey through the jungle in order to visit her Neighbour who is currently studying frogs there? Or was it the fact that The Neighbour and she talked about some more serious stuff like: can you separate the art from the artist-and therefore went deep? We don’t know, but we know for sure you are going to have one special ear-worm for the rest of the summer.

"Indonesian films are something we don't really hear or watch in the UK. In this episode, our volunteers interviewed an Indonesian actor to talk about the film industry in Indonesia. Plus, recommendations on Indonesian films.
<!--break-->

In this episode, volunteers Lenah and Paul talked to British-Indonesian actor Hannah Al Rashid about Indonesian films, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry in Indonesia, censorship, and what Indonesian films to watch!

17. My Neighbour Recommends

But most importantly:

He loves movies...and board games. He likes cooking Gumbo for his friends and spending Sundays in his bathrobe. But most importantly: He is my Neighbour. And he recommends films. Having survived watching Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, volunteer Nora sets off in a mini submarine to visit her Neighbour some 10 000 miles under the sea, where he is currently counting fish for the RSPCA. Therefore, he recommended Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, while Nora recommended a film for the first time to her Neighbour: Wolfgang Petersen’s Das Boot. Although never seen it herself, she has some vivid memories with Das Boot..

In this special CHRISTMAS episode, Volunteer Nora once again travels to her Neighbour, who happens to reside on the North Pole at the moment, helping Santa distributing DVDs and Blu Rays (and possibly some VHSes?). They talk about the festive “masterpiece” Silent Night, Deadly Night, the genre of scary Christmas movies in general, Bad Santas and of course, the one and only: Krampus.

“It’s an invasion of children’s dreams and phantasies.“
John P.-School Principal, Vermont (About Silent Night, Deadly Night)

10. Black History Month: The History of Black Horror Cinema

Deptford Cinema volunteers Maria & Frankie talk about the history of black representation in horror films, from the blaxploitation era and the 1990s/early 2000s.<!--break-->

We discuss how horror films made by Black filmmakers or with Black casts differ (or not) from other types of horror film in terms of what is shown to be scary. Horror films often reflect what people are afraid of in their everyday lives to some extent, but when these films centre Black people those fears are often very different or much more nuanced.

8. My Neighbour Recommends (again)

He loves movies...and board games. He likes cooking Gumbo for his friends and spending Sundays in his bathrobe.

But most importantly:

He is my neighbour...
and he recommends films.<!--break-->

Due to her Neighbour working remotely at the moment, Volunteer Nora once again met up with him at his rather unusual current residency. They not only discuss “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” and “Dead Man”, they also talk about space, an interesting way of sending Blue Rays up there and the chance of a promising future film collaboration.

In this first episode of two parts, DC veteran Slav presents to Rob five of his favourite film soundtracks for him to guess. Instead of playing excerpts from the original recordings, we decided that we would perform these soundtracks on whatever instrument was to hand - in this case a piano and electronic organ. Each soundtrack is followed by a discussion about the music and the film it belongs to. In the upcoming second episode the roles are reversed with Rob performing his five pieces for Slav to guess.

<itunes:summary>In this episode, Caroline, Tashi and Ben chat about one of the outstanding movies of 2019, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, the semi-autobiographical story of Jimmie Fails, who tries to reclaim his childhood home in a gentrified area of San Francisco.

We are delighted to be joined by Anita Strasser, artist, activist and author of Deptford is Changing, to talk about her new publication, which is all about the impact of gentrification.

NB: The podcast was recorded in April 2020 before the death of Floyd George and the resulting Black Lives Matter campaign. We believe our conversations may have had a different focus if recorded more recently.</itunes:summary>

3. Cut in half and thrown in a pit...

Remember when Darth Maul showed up in the Solo film? but didn’t he get cut in half and die in The Phantom Menace? Yeh, it’s confusing, so we decided to discuss it…<!--break-->

Volunteers and Star Wars fans, Anna, Neal and Sam discuss the idea of shared stories, connectivity and canon across both films and other media such as tv, comics, books and games and how the characters and and arcs from this supporting material affects the average movie-goer’s understanding and enjoyment of the wider plot.

2. My Neighbour Recommends

He loves movies...and board games. He likes cooking Gumbo for his friends and spending Sundays in his bathrobe.

But most importantly:

He is my neighbour...
and he recommends films.<!--break-->

Volunteer Nora interviews her Neighbour about his film watching habits during lockdown, but they also talk about one of his favourite directors: Ari Aster. Due to the Miniseason “My Neighbour Recommends” being postponed at the Cinema, Nora set off to The Neighbour’s current residency to discuss things like nasty bastards, faces in trees and The Castles of Mad King Ludwig in this 30 minute special.

bonus. Pedro vs. Peter - Horror Films

Pedro and Peter are Deptford Cinema volunteers who famously don’t agree on many things…<!--break-->

We thought we’d check in with them from time to time on a cinema-centric topic to see if they can come to some kind of agreement.

This time around, a short discussion on the topic of Horror films…

1. Welcome to Deptford Cinema!

We also discuss the current pandemic and its affect on not only the cinema's ability to screen films but also on the well-being of its volunteer body. What does lockdown and social distancing measures mean for Deptford Cinema now and in the months ahead?
